Alport syndrome grants

The Alport Syndrome Foundation (ASF), the Pedersen Family and the Kidney Foundation of Canada (KFOC) have announced that there are new funds available for researchers working to increase knowledge of Alport syndrome.

The program anticipates awarding two research grants worth $100,000 each. The funding programs are looking for projects with the potential to accelerate the development of new treatments that can prolong kidney function and prevent hearing loss, such as:

  • Projects to identify and investigate target pathways in disease progression;
  • Projects working on drug repurposing of pre-existing drugs or on new approaches that improve the current standard of care.

Each application must be no longer than 15 pages (plus budget and requested attachments); with a 12-point font size and one-inch margins. Applications must contain the following: a completed information form; a lay abstract summarizing the project; a section presenting the specific aims of the project; and a section discussing the background and significance of the project.

They must also include a summary of research design and methods; a timetable for the project’s objectives; a statement indicating whether human or animal subjects will be involved in the research; a description of the resources and environment available for the project; a list of projected personnel and their role; and a detailed budget for the proposed activities.

According to the proposal process, submissions should also include biographical information regarding the principal investigator (in this format); a copy of the informed consent form of any human subjects, if applicable; proof of current or pending approval by an institutional review board; proof of current or pending project approval by the institutions’ animal use and protection committee; and a list of at least three individuals who would be appropriate reviewers for this research funding proposal.

Selected projects will be evaluated by their importance and impact, feasibility, and prospect of long-term funding.

Researchers who wish to apply for these funds should submit their applications before 5 p.m. Arizona Time/MST on Monday, March 20. No late submissions will be considered.

According to the press release, researchers from countries around the world may apply for these grants.

Successful applicants will be notified in June, in accordance with the ASF, Pedersen Family, and KFOC Alport Syndrome Research Funding Program.
